Met Ball 2013

Since we're all still getting to know each other around here, it's time for me to confess my love for fashion. My passion for fashion, if you will. Now let's be real honest, I'm not a dress to impress every day of the week kind of girl. Some (most) days, you'll find me in what I consider comfortable, skinny jeans or yoga pants and a basic top. However when I do put the extra effort into it, I absolutely love to express myself through what I wear.

Something else I love? Celebrity fashion!
It's time for me to pretend like I'm sitting with Joan Rivers, Giuliana Rancic, Kelly Osbourne, and George Kotsiopoulos on the set of Fashion Police for a review of the good, the bad, and the "I can't decide if I like you or not" from the Met Ball 2013.

The Met Ball is the big shebang for the world of fashion.
Movies have the Oscars. Broadway has the Tonys. Music has the Grammys.
Fashion has the Met Ball.
It's hosted by Vogue. This is the big kahuna. Catch my drift?

This years theme was Punk: Chaos to Couture. In my opinion, punk can be done really right or really wrong. But it's also interesting because I definitely believe that everyone has a different take on the word "punk". In my mind there is a really fine line and you're either going to nail it or look like a freak. So let's move on to the fun part, shall we?

The Good

Anne Hathaway in Valentino
Hold up Annie-poo, is that really you? This is what I call a major redemption after that horrible pale pink dart boob dress at the Oscars. Not only did she nail the punk theme, but she is a brunette than can somehow pull off bleach blonde hair. I definitely like my Annie with some edge rather than goodie-too shoes with pointy boobs. For me, this is a best dressed for sure.

Taylor Swift in J.Mendel
I can't believe I'm about to write this because she is not my favorite person. But gosh I just love this. It's been a while since we've seen your forehead Taylor, and right now I'm not missing your blunt bangs at all. And that dress? The perfect combo of punk meets high fashion. I think this is the first in a while I've seen her actually look her age and not 20 years older. Fun fact - Taylor Swift actually grew up about 10 minutes from me before she moved to Nashville and became a part-time star and full-time crazy girlfriend.

Rooney Mara in Givenchy Couture by Riccardo Tisci
Have you seen Girl with the Dragon Tattoo? This girl was born to be punk. Although this choice landed her on some worst dressed lists, I disagree completely. I think she gives off the perfect combination of punk and gothic. Her hair and make-up really tie it all together. I also give her major props for choosing a white dress and making it work for the theme - unlike Katie Holmes.

 Stacey Keibler in Rachel Roy
Not only is she gorgeous, but she also gets to call George Clooney her boyfriend. What doesn't this girl have? Although we've seen her in a studded dress quite a few times, they seem to just work for her, so I say keep on doing it girlfriend. I think she looks edgy, punky, and extremely rock&roll all at the once. A little piece of me wishes she went in a different direction with her hair, but I'll forgive.

Cara Delevingne in Burberry
To me, the British model looked amazing. She nailed the punk theme all around from her dress to her hair and make-up. That being said, I don't think she took the punk too far like some others. She looks absolutely stunning, but I guess that's somewhat expected of her since she is, after all, a model. I'd like to imagine that if I was about a half a foot taller, flatter chested, and without curves - this would be what I would wear on this red carpet.

Jessica Biel in Giambattista Valli Couture
Oh Mrs. Timberlake, in my opinion, you nailed this. Although this choice landed her on quote a few worst dress lists, I don't care because I'm into it. There were quite a few celebs that tried to do the whole pants & skirt combo, but none of them can compare for me. This is edgy, it's fierce, and it's fun. And did you notice she is wearing a nose-ring? She's so cool. Her make-up is super natural and understated and she still looks flawless. I also bet she could beat Justin in an arm wrestling contest with those amazing arms. Girl looks good!

Sarah Jessica Parker in Giles Deacon
I went back and forth with this one for quite a while. At one point it was under the "undecided" section for me. Then I reminded myself that the theme was punk and this isn't your average red carpet. It's at an art museum and the fashion choices should make an artistic statement. And for me, SJP did that for sure. The dress is gorgeous and soft, but is juxtaposed by that amazing headpiece. And the mohawk on it? SO punk. If I could change one thing it would be the thigh high plaid boots.

The Bad

Kim Kardashian in Givenchy Couture by Riccardo Tisci
This is the worst of the worst for me. Where do I start. Kim could have ended up on my shit list because I believe she is a fame-whore who somehow gained popularity through a sex tape. She also has another strike against her for dating Kanye. And then add another for housing his child in her womb. Needless to say, she isn't my favorite. And neither is this fashion choice. It looks like she wallpapered her body. Or stole this look from Mrs. Doubtfire. Either way I hate it. Everything about it. Especially the fact that it has matching gloves attached and her hands look almost nonexistent.

Gwyneth Paltrow in Valentino Couture
I don't really have much to say about this other than it's boring, not at all punk, and she could do so much better. She was just named People's most beautiful woman alive, and she is gorgeous, but this dress does her no justice.

Kristen Stewart in Stella McCartney
Every time I see Kristen, I immediately think of Grumpy Cat. I usually am a fan of a jumpsuit when done right, but for me this does not fall into that category. Is it just me or does it look like it's not tailored correctly in her crotch area? Maybe it's just the fabric. I definitely expected her to do a better job with the punk theme, especially because most of the time she looks grungy and disheveled.

 Nicole Richie in Topshop
I really tried to like this, honestly. I just couldn't get past the hair. Although I believe she was attempting punk, she just ended up looking like a troll doll. Stick a gemstone in her belly button and she's a dead ringer. I think maybe if the hair was done in a different color it could have possibly been better, but I'm not even thrilled by her dress. It's a very ghostly look all around.

Miley Cyrus in Marc Jacobs
I think this is another case of 'can't get past the hair'. I was actually a fan of Miley hair when she took the plunge and chopped it all off. But I think her haircut was punky enough before she spiked the crap out of it. She could really poke someone's eye out with that. It's giving off a very cactus meets chia pet meets pineapple. I don't even hate the dress, it's actually great for the theme. And her rep lips are amazing. It's just the hair.

Nicki Minaj in Tommy Hilfiger
1.) Why is she there? and 2.) Why would Tommy Hilfiger let her wear his dress? EVERYTHING about this is bad, horrible, trashy, ugly.

Madonna in Givenchy Couture by Riccardo Tisci
I don't know if there will ever come a day where Madonna will dress her age. She definitely embraced the punk theme and is rocking this look - and then I remember that she is almost 55, this is intended to be a classy event, she's not wearing any pants, and she showed up with her 25 year old boyfriend... I smell a midlife crisis.

The Undecided

Beyoncé in Givenchy Couture by Riccardo Tisci
I'm pretty sure I don't like this. And then I look at it again and remember that it's Beyoncé. Queen B. She usually rocks the red carpet. I'm getting a really subtle punk vibe from this. There are definitely some things I could do without - she should have chosen between the gloves or the boots, but not both. It makes it took matchy. And it looks like her boobs are about to spill out of that dress.

Jennifer Lawrence in Christian Dior
My girl crush. How can you not love this girl? In general she's been making great fashion choices on the red carpet. I'm just a little unsure about this one. I love it, but for me it's not really giving off punk. It's more of a gothic glamour kind of look, which looks great on her, just not for the theme of the night. I also think maybe the dress is too heavy for the springtime, and for her in general.

Gisele Bundchen in Anthony Vaccarello
I'm undecided on this dress because it's really super skimpy and I don't know that it's completely appropriate for this event. That being said, she is Gisele, and if anyone can rock this dress it would be her. Also, she's got Tom Brady on her arm. I rest my case.

Uma Thurman in Zac Posen
Love the dress, but it's not at all punk. Not even a smidge.

Cameron Diaz in Stella McCartney
If this dress was done in black, you could plop her right in the middle of a Twilight movie with the evil vampire volturi group and she would blend right in. I love the color of this dress and the spiky belt, but I'm not sure I'm loving the whole picture here. And I think the color of her hair is too light.

Christina Ricci in Vivienne Westwood
I'm so undecided on this because she embraced the punk theme and executed it in a unique way. I'm just not sure how I feel about it. I think I like it. I think. But I just can't decide.

So what do you think? Agree? Disagree?

No WAIT! Don't say it - I know what you're thinking, I'm the next Rachel Zoe and I have the best taste. You're so kind!

  1. I am no fashion buff, but oh no no, Gisele! It looks like she got that dress straight off a rack at Wet Seal!

  2. Very well put pretty lady! I think I'm distracted by the handsome hubby on her arm. And the more I look at it, the more lopsided the dress makes her look!

  4. I almost spilled my drink all over myself reading this!
I agree with a lot of what you said. And NO I hate Christina's dress. It looks like a badly wrapped Christmas gift. All-in-all I'm disappointed that most attendees did not get with the 'punk' theme.

  5. I definitely agree with most of your picks! I actually liked Christina and Miley only because they were super punk and pulled it off without looking like Madonna. Taylor could have done more with her hair, but I loved her dress.

  6. I am going to say Anne (in this particular occasion) has given the others a run for their money. And, you are right, somehow she pulls the bleach blonde hair very well. Yet, I don't feel as anyone of them truly pulled off the "punk" theme very well.
